22 January 2014 – evolving fresh fruit and vegetable supply chains

Two industry-led analyses of the fresh fruit and vegetable supply chain provide insight into how the industry is evolving. The first comes from fresh congress 2013 – this has a short video presentation where industry-leaders give their opinions on how the fresh produce supply chain is adapting, highlighting increasing re-structuring and concentration as more retailers source direct from producers. The second comes from Rabobank in a short report on declining fruit and vegetable consumption despite increasing health consciousness. The authors cite lower incomes and perceived price increases, alongside strong competition from processed and convenience foods as  major factors driving this trend.
