24 April 2014 – Mulberry Street market, New York

The Guardian website has a great early colour photograph of Mulberry Street market, New York circa 1900. The article tells the story of how black and white photographs were tinted by the Detroit Publishing Company using lithographic printing plates. It’s worth a look to see how the restricted range of colour was used – as the article points out, all  the residents of New York appear to have owned clothes of the same ochre and pink.
