25 July 2014 – irrigation systems and milk co-operatives in the Bavarian Alps

I am in the Bavarian Alps and came across this irrigation system for the cattle – just a simple wooden spout and trough connected to a pipe that brings water down the mountain. Local farmers all take milk to the co-operative and there is an interesting museum in Oberjoch about the history of the co-operative system for cheese-makers in the area that dates back to the eighteenth century. Anyone following how global and local food chains develop – and how they are thought about in different national contexts – might find the GLAMUR project website worth looking at.
