28 July 2014 Kräutergärten in Bavaria

Kräutergärten were established in the region around Aichach, Bavaria in the seventeenth century for villagers to grow their own vegetables and white cabbage (to make sauerkraut to sustain them over the winter months). Some of these gardens still exist – and individual houses continue to have rights to the gardens – others have become schrebergärten – known in the UK as allotments – where growing vegetables is still important, but flowers and even small lawns are in evidence as the photo shows.
