29 July 2015 – UK farmers use social media to raise public awareness of their struggles

Following on from my blog of 22 July about how Dutch farmers are attempting to raise public awareness of their struggles in the milk sector, a group of 70 farmers’ wives and farmers from Kirkcudbright, Scotland have produced a music video – Milk Must Have a Future – to draw attention to the problems facing the UK dairy industry.

At the same time, Welsh farmers are encouraging others to withhold their prime lambs from August 1-7 in protest at the current downturn in the UK lamb trade. The farmers are also using social media #NoLambWeek to raise public awareness of the low prices they are receiving from supermarkets who are not passing this on to consumers. With lamb prices at a six year low, the group hope that by raising awareness, retailers will respond to their problems.
